The Lakewatch Program

What is the Program?

The Lakewatch Program is a community water quality testing program offered to concerned Albertans who are interested in collecting detailed information about their local lake or reservoir. ALMS technicians assist local volunteers to test the lakes 5 times during the summer, collecting important physical data such as water temperature, clarity and pH. Once all the data is collected we produce a water quality report for the lake, including recommendations, that both educates lake users and guides water restoration and management efforts.

Participant Reviews

This program (Lakewatch) is very beneficial. Our water is our most precious resource... We need to take care to preserve what freshwater systems we have, and the best way to do this is through monitoring small changes over time to help us predict impending problems so that we can take action before it is too late.
Jennifer Johnson, Crane Lake Advisory and Stewardship Society

ALMS provided the expertise and equipment for sampling and testing, and we were more than happy to provide the volunteers and boats needed... Without this program we would not have been able to do the sampling and testing, and thus determine what we are working with, and make a plan to proceed to improve the water quality of our lake.
Laverne Faulkner, Chair
Wizard Lake Watershed & Lake Stewardship Association

How can I get my lake tested?

Organized lake associations or committed individuals are requested to contact ALMS if you are interested in getting your lake assessed. We are only able to provide a detailed monitoring program for 10 lakes per year so space is limited. Potential participants are requested to provide the following:
  • Primary contact name, phone number and address.
  • Lake name and general location.
  • Reason for wanting your lake tested
  • List of at least two volunteers committed to participating in the program.
If you or your association is interested in participating, please contact us!

2010 Technicians

Welcome Aboard!!

Bradley recently graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science degree in Ecology. Having taken courses in limnology and completed projects on eutrophication, Bradley is excited to put his education to use this summer as an ALMS technician. Prior to this position, he sampled soil in agricultural fields, worked in a bookstore, and taught swimming lessons.  In his downtime, he likes to play classical piano, read, run, and swim. In the field you’ll likely find him with a pair of binoculars and a field guide, hoping to catch a glimpse of some of Alberta’s wildlife.

Emily is a soon-to-be graduate at the University of Alberta and will be completing her BSc. degree with a specialization in Microbiology as of the end of April 2011. As a part of her last year in school, she will hopefully be working in a research lab investigating biofuel production or petroleum microbiology, which will hopefully lead to a Master’s project in the near future. After graduation, she plans to take a break from school and volounteer abroad with Canada World Youth or do some world travelling of her own.

When not working hard at school, Emily loves to spend time outdoors – snowboarding, camping, canoeing, kayaking, boating etc. – hopefully she’ll get out to the mountains this summer for some great hiking. As a native of Northwestern Ontario, she also hopes to get home for a bit to spend some time on her own lake and check out the Winnipeg Folk Festival.

What other monitoring programs are available?

Other volunteer monitoring/assessment programs that you can find more about include:
  • Shoreline/Riparian Assessments - This type of assessment involves collecting baseline information about a lake's shoreline and immediate adjacent areas (aquatic vegetation and substrate type in the littoral zone, state of riparian areas in adjacent upland). These data can be used to assist provincial land and resource manager's in characterizing the status of the lake, and assist local municipalities in their land use planning.
  • Stream Health Assessments - This type of assessment involves collecting baseline information on the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of a stream and its adjacent riparian area. These streams may flow in or out of a lake from within the watershed, and the quality of the stream environment is a reflection of land use practices within the watershed. The characterization of the stream and its water quality is partially based on assessing the type of aquatic invertebrates (indicator species) inhabiting the aquatic environment.
  • Watershed Assessments - This type of assessment involves collecting information on land uses within a watershed that may influence the quality of stream and lake environments. This information allows individuals, associations and local municipalities to understand the effect of those potential land use practices and develop strategies to mitigate those effects.
* These monitoring/assessment programs are not currently offered by ALMS

Partnerships

Provincial Parks Lakes Monitoring and Outreach Partnership
Many lake enthusiasts in Alberta take advantage of the superb facilities offered by provincial parks. ALMS is active in reaching out to these recreationists through our Provincial Parks Lakes Monitoring & Outreach Program. This is a partnership with Alberta Environment and Alberta Community Development (new name) to monitor lakes associated with a provincial park, while providing education & awareness opportunities to park users. Lakes part of this program include Beauvais, Chain (South), Crimson, Dillberry, Elkwater, Gregg, Gregoire, Jarvis, Long, McLeod (East), Miquelon, Moonshine, Newell, Reesor, Saskatoon, Spruce Coulee, Steele, Sturgeon (East), Winagami, Upper Kananaskis, and Lower Kananaskis.

Beaver River Watershed Alliance Partnership

Our partnership with the BRWA is a continuation of our partnership with the Lakeland Industry & Community Association (LICA)
  • Provide a link between BRWA and the lake community
  • Increase education & awareness of citizens on water quality
  • Provide a regional picture of water quality
  • Provide recommendations to address information gaps and management options
