Winter LakeKeepers 2023-2024 Report

Executive Summary:

The Winter LakeKeepers program, launched in 2018-2019, has grown into ALMS’s largest monitoring initiative, engaging volunteers in winter lake monitoring across Alberta. This citizen science program enables participants, including WPACs, WSGs, ice anglers, and partner organizations, to monitor lakes of personal or community concern. By 2022-2023, the program expanded to include advanced sampling methods, such as white ice thickness and under-ice light measurements, and offered three tiers of protocols to suit varying experience levels.

The Winter LakeKeepers program in 2023-2024 included 62 lakes (Map 2). In total, 171 monitoring trips were completed by 94 participants across most of the major watersheds, including: Athabasca River, Battle River, Beaver River, Bow River, North Saskatchewan River, Oldman River and Peace River and Red Deer River. Sampling began on December 5th, and the final sampling event occurred on March 27th.

The 2023-2024 Winter LakeKeepers program was made possible by the Alberta Conservation Association’s (ACA).

Land Acknowledgment:

We respectfully acknowledge that our work takes place on the traditional territories of Canada’s First Peoples, including the Cree, Dene, Blackfoot, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Inuit, and the Otipemisiwak Métis Government representing the Métis Nation within Alberta, as well as the Métis Settlements. The lakes we monitor are located within these territories, and we honor the enduring connection of Indigenous communities to the land, waters, and sky. We are committed to fostering respect, reconciliation, and meaningful partnerships with all Indigenous communities through our programs as we monitor and protect these vital natural resources together.
